As part of our celebrations for HOME 2nd Birthday we decided to compile a list of top 10 “HOME” songs. Each of these songs are special to us for different reasons and all of them sum up the buzz at Home. They’re in particular order and here goes…
10) The Emotions – Best of My Love
This was a stalwart of our early sets and is one of those songs that takes people to dizzy heights and has been known to make folk weep tears of joy on the dancefloor… an absolutely gawrjus female vocal.
9) Fleetwood Mac – Family Man (Flight Facilities Edit)
This selection comes from our resident Dj and vibe monkey Ler (also known as Lerrdy, Feelers or Feldspar):
Flight facilities, heralded for their decade mixes, have resurrected this gem and what a crowd pleaser its proved to be…
8) Terrence Parker – Emancipation of my Soul
This choice comes from Dan:
I originally heard this in Krystal Klear’s first boiler room set and instantly fell in love with it. It’s a real opener for a set if you’re coming on late and starting with a housey vibe. Often when we’re playing from early and starting with some slo-mo disco edits it’s a nice track to play in order to transition from the slower disco edits to something a bit more upbeat. I particularly remember playing an impromptu set down at Middle Earth Festival a year ago at around 2am and starting with this and everyone went a bit mad!
7) Alkalino – We Jiggle
This one is from Jimmy:
Alkalino’s enticing percussion based build breaks down into a sumptuous piano riff that always leaves the crowd’s hips jiggling
6) Steve Winwood – Higher Love
This one is from Bish:
JBL’s first set – St. Patricks weekend, Ireland had just beaten France to win the Six Nations and the Grand Social was packed. This was our last song and was met by some cracking stage dancing <3!
5) Ape Generals – Padded Bra
This one’s from Risteard:
Kudos must go to my bro Tony for this one, in the early days we inherited his record collection and it was a big influence on us deciding to run our first night. This tune in particular is a very rare, little bit rough around the edges, white label breaks remix of Nenah Cherry’s Buffalo Stance and anyone who ever came down to Dan’s shed and heard us play will recognise it… A true Home classic, we even had to upload it to soundcloud ourselves.
4) Unfinished Business – Out of my Hands (Love’s Taken Over)
We recently acquired this record mixed by the late great Frankie Knuckles, it is typically funky with a soulful vocal and glorious horns. We have finished a few of our sets with this recently and it has quickly become one of Dan and Risteard’s favourite records.
3) We Can’t Fly – Aeroplane
This choice comes from Fuzzzaaaay who’ll made his debut HOME appearance at our 2nd Birthday
This has been played at more than a few house parties and HOME’S around Dublin (pun intended). The song blends hints of Soul, Reggae and Ska to become a Nu Disco tribute to the weekend. Every time I hear it dropped, it makes me smile ear to ear, my hips wiggle and my feet frolic. It instructs my body that the weekend has officially landed and that we should celebrate this time with our closest friends and favourite tunes. There is also a very good remix of the track by Oliver that I suggest you check out if you haven’t already.
2) Fleetwood Mac – Everywhere
From the way this song starts with a starlight twinkle that trickles perfectly over almost any previous track to the bouncy melody and the joyous sing along chorus this is not your typical nightclub floor filler but it is an out and out HOME favourite and has featured in many of our sets.
1) Talking Heads – This Must Be The Place
This is a special song for us, We witnessed a dj set by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy at Electric Picnic 3 years ago where he finished with this song and it was the catalyst that inspired us to bring our music collection to the people and start our own night. We have been at HOME ever since!
